Art is alive and well at The Turbine

Monday, February 05, 2018
Situated on the picturesque Thesen Islands, in Knysna, revamped from an historical wood-burning power station is one of South Africa’s most unusual hotels - the 5-star Turbine Boutique Hotel and Spa – a fascinating blend of history and innovation; and adding another extraordinary element to this blend is its “moving” Art gallery that showcases local South African artists.

Aside from its luxury accommodation – 26 individually-decorated bedrooms and suites all with unusual décor - it also has stunning original artworks adorning the walls.

“We're proud of our funky industrial-chic décor and we take pride in featuring local talent and supporting its heritage we've turned some of our spaces into an informal art gallery”, explains general manager Chris Schutte. “The art on display is curated by one of Knysna's local fine art galleries, Knysna Fine Art. All the works are by local South African artists and are for sale, so, if you like what you see you can buy the art and take the memories back home with you.”

Curator Corlie de Kock, of the Knysna Fine Art gallery, used a specific approach to creating the summer collection.

“The works of the Turbine Collection Summer 2017/2018 were carefully selected to enhance the aesthetic of this wonderful space. Contemporary South African art in different media - collage, photography, and painting - form part of this eclectic collection; and the palette and style is a continuation of the interior of the hotel. We assembled a body of contemporary artworks that would provide the Turbine’s guests with a unique and unexpected pleasure – one that would surprise and delight both art novices and the more sophisticated collectors."

Speaking of the hotel's Summer Art Collection, Schutte says, "We wanted our guests to have a distinctive experience when they visit, and with the curated artworks complementing the hotel's contemporary and funky overall design the way they do, gives them that experience.”
